The father of botany is considered to be Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher and student of Aristotle, who lived around 371-287 BCE. He is known for his work "Enquiry into Plants" (Historia Plantarum), which is considered to be the first systematic study of plants. He made significant contributions to the field of botany by classifying and describing over 500 different plants, and by providing the first known descriptions of many plant processes such as germination, growth and reproduction. He also made observations on plant habitats and medicinal properties of plants. His work laid the foundation for the study of botany as a scientific discipline and his methods of classification and observation are still used today.
