What are the steps of the scientific method?

The scientific method generally includes the following steps:

  1. Observation and identification of a problem or question.
  2. Formulation of a hypothesis to explain the phenomenon.
  3. Use of experimentation and/or other methods to test the hypothesis.
  4. Analysis of data and conclusions drawn from the data.
  5. Reporting of results and the formulation of a theory if the data supports the hypothesis.
  6. Repeating the steps to confirm or disprove the theory or to gather more data to improve the theory.
